WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE FROM WHAT YOU SEE IN A FILM?

WHAT HAVE YOU APPRECIATED FROM A FILM THAT OTHERS DON'T?

In a film, there are lots of elements that are able to be utilized for a surprise, climax or unexpected sudden change in a plot line. And there are required to have good build ups through a plot points, foreshadow, visual directing or intensity of time interval that each cases happens. Today I have a question on specific usage of one of these element. It is about sudden change or surprise in a film.

of course a big surprise or a sudden change can not be RANDOM. If it is entirely disregarding the relationships to previous plots, then it is nothing but misunderstanding and just shit.

my questions is about elements that are suggested or shown before a sudden change or surprise.

It is very important for a director on decision of what to show, even more than what to hide. That's simply because ( I believe) things that are shown actually and more influentially determines the perception of what is in the world to lead the plot for audiences to follow.

Then, for those shown or given elements or plot points, what are the factors that determines if it is confusing or curious for audience?

brief and maybe little personal questions this time

AS AN YOUNG ARTIST,
is it better to experience, learn and express (in drawing, painting, design and etc) in different styles as many as possible?
rather than keeping yourself in one style you developed or found suitable?
(maybe until everybody can recognize your style at once?)

I know both are important but for 'young artists'. people who has a style that people can recognize at once are always respected for the distinctive charm of it. but change seems to be something you should not be far away to evolve into something beyond where you are.

logically, I know one will say both of them are important as an artist...
or, one might say style is a natural thing, must be kept and it's the subject matter, philosophy or perspective that needs to keep changing and evolving...
or, one might say, an artist without challenges and changes is a dead artist....
Let's little bit distanced from philosophical third person POV and...... why don't we reflect ourselves little bit here?..and let's talk out honestly where we are. I will join in too..lol

more correct question might be

What does change in style mean to artist?
What does style mean to evolve and improve as an artist?

From the previous post, We had a good discussion about where and how we pursuit creativity from Life or self-consciousness as pivotal source.
Thanks to Will and Manny, I thought the friendly arguments between them about narrative and non-narrative art form can be stretched out further, so I writing this post. also, I'd like to discuss specifically under realm of ANIMATION/FILM.

Narrative and non-narrative seems to be pretty big thing even in CalArts (California Institute of Arts) where has Character Animation program and Experimental Animation program. Maybe that could be only my assumption but I mostly have seen lots of great narrative animation films from Character Animation students and Experimental Animation students have produced beautiful non-narrative films. I understand it is a stupid thing to judge which form is 'better' or 'valuable' although the film is meant to be something very specific.

Narrative form of film is informative, easily understandable and relatable to audiences, which offers certain methods to provoke certain emotion, reaction or messages. I can't easily say non-narrative films can't do any of those. Maybe they are even more powerful to create pure emotions and reactions, even messages. here is an example of great experimental animation that is not narrative but certainly expressive in its way.

the first video is the animated visualization of various 'taste' from Ratatouille. I am sure most people would recognize if you watched 'Ratatouille, Pixar' Both of them are done by Michel Gagne. Both of animation definitely visualizes the certain music or emotion and they work in their way. especially the end of 'GOT IT!' animation piece is so powerful as it just dies into muddy color of bubbles. IT certainly has ups and downs like like narrative films and emotional in its way. I am keep saying oh, both can to this stuff that stuff and i know i sound very pluralism. but yes, here are the questions.

What are distinctive direction of purposes or functions in narrative and non-narrative film/ animated films?

Beyond a question of which form of film is suitable for a specific subject matter or applications, How differently do they approach to audiences?

PS- I am seriously concerned about my grammars now.

This post may evolve from my personal opinion and perspective.(as always)
JUST READ QUESTIONS IF INTRO IS TOO LONG

Lots of masters have said and you will hear more. Learn from Life. Yes I agree. But it definitely is a complicated transformation of ideas. From A to B. let's say A is life and B is Art you express, I will narrow down to the question as how I got to this question.
It is not hard to be impressed or inspired by something from artworks as a curious young art school student. we are all very curious of things and we are in a stage of developing our tastes and process of producing artworks. but is it easy to be inspired from Life?
easy example might be the relationship between LIFE DRAWING and ANIMATION. We all know old disney brought in deers and other animals when they were making Bambi. understanding physics, psychological response appears through direction of your body, balance, line of action, intention, structure, form or whatever, Yap they are not hard to figure out and they will be show up in your drawing if you study for decades. and It sure is NECESSARY things to be anything GREAT.

but question appears when a matter of CREATIVITY comes in between the relationship.

one may say, if you know skills or foundation, you can't let raw yourself out freely because of path that is already built by skills. it's just like children's drawing, creative things are coming from pure inspiration and impression. so, LEARNING from life as foundational knowledge may be obstacle? so here is my first question that is little broad

Creativity comes from deep internal study of yourself
OR,
Creative comes from breaking apart from influences and knowledges you've learned from external LIFE?

Another question is evolved out of that question but little narrowed down. Now I am about SIMPLICITY. a lot of you must have heard that CIRCULAR SHAPES are always appealing. for some reason, they are freaking appealing. like shape of baby head, like shapes of boobs, they are just so appealing, you love it. do you think i am too biased? maybe but think about something circle, it's just so universally appealing. So simple and definite shaped CHARACTER DESIGNS are pretty popular and hot stuff these days. Especially, the ease of access of the character, technological reasons, it's easy to produce for indie-film makers and always selling. and it's always harder to make things clean and simple than complicated. Then let's combine some idea.
and question is under premise of 'SIMPLICITY IS SIMPLY GREAT'

how relatable is simplicity to life around us? where, how, what do we learn about simplicity?

If you say life is complicated shit, and does nothing to do with creation which need to be simple,

what cause us to love simplicity and inspire simplicity?

second question may be little be too opinionated question but whatever, I question.
I love to hear your opinions.
sorry for bad English, please just suck it up.
Let's evolve from there.

We see tons of different kinds of films, that are made by talented group of people to tell a story. Yes, we say story, story, story, story is the king. upon the question about origin of specific style of art, animation, color or whatever, story seems more radical and ultimate question to ask value of a film(in my opinion...definitely some films does present amazingly NEW art in film that that does sensational things but crazy thing about story is that every story can be NEW!!). Among infinite variety of stories and subject matters, few questions come up to me.

what makes a story worthy to be told in films?

This may be little vague but I'd like to respect your personal interpretation.
Let's evolve from there
